POWWOW QUICK INSTALLATION GUIDE
Copyright (C) 1996 Tribal Voice
Prepared by Aryeh Goretsky
This document is divided into two sections: Section I is for first-time
PowWow users who have not run the software before. Section II is for people
upgrading from an earlier version of PowWow.
Please refer to the PowWow User's Guide (filename POWWOW.DOC or POWWOW.WRI)
in your PowWow directory for instructions on setting up and using PowWow.
I. INSTALLING POWWOW FOR THE FIRST TIME
----------------------------------------
1. You must first have a copy of PowWow. If you do not have one you
can download it from:
http://www.tribal.com/powwow/download/default.htm
on our World-Wide Web server. When downloading PowWow be sure to
use the 'save to disk' or 'save as' option in your World-Wide Web
browser, instead of using a helper-application. Most World-Wide
Web browsers let you specify 'save to disk' by clicking the right
mouse button on a ftp link when downloading a file.
2. After downloading the PowWow .ZIP file create a directory named
C:\POWWOW and move the PowWow .ZIP file to it. Unpack the .ZIP
file using PKUNZIP, WinZip or other unzip program. If you do not
have an unzip program you can download one from:
http://www.pkware.com/ *OR* http://www.winzip.com/
along with instructions explaining how to use the unzip program.
3. Copy the CTL3D.DLL file from your PowWow directory to your
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If any other CTL3D.DLL files are on
your hard disk they should be removed (erased or renamed).
4. Create an icon for PowWow.
Windows 3.1 and NT 3.51 Users:
Make a new program item by going to the Windows Program Manager,
selecting File->New->Program Item, and entering "PowWow" for the
Description, "C:\POWWOW\POWWOW.EXE" for the Command Line, and
"C:\POWWOW" for the Working Directory.
Windows 95 and NT 4.0 Users:
To add PowWow to your Task BarÆs Start Menu, click the right mouse
button on the Start button. From the Start menu, select Open to
bring up the Start Menu folder. Click on File->New->Shortcut and
enter "C:\POWWOW\POWWOW.EXE" for the Command Line (or use the Browse
button to locate your PowWow) and enter "C:\POWWOW" for the Start
in: field. When finished, click on Next and Finish when done.
5. Please refer to the PowWow User's Guide, PowWow Frequently-Asked
Questions list, and HISTORY.TXT file for information on the new
release of PowWow.
You have now successfully installed PowWow.
II. UPGRADING FROM AN EARLIER VERSION OF POWWOW
------------------------------------------------
1. Download the latest version of PowWow if you do not have it. A
list of download sites is available from:
http://www.tribal.com/powwow/download/default.htm
2. After downloading the PowWow .ZIP file you must unpack it using a
PKUNZIP, WinZip or other unzip program. If you do not have an unzip
program you can download one from:
http://www.pkware.com/ *OR* http://www.winzip.com/
along with instructions explaining how to use the unzip program.
3. Copy the PowWow .ZIP file to your existing PowWow directory. Do
not erase any existing files. When you unpack the PowWow .ZIP file
allow it to overwrite any old files.
NOTE: If you do not unpack PowWow to your existing PowWow directory
the upgrade will fail and you will lose access to your sounds,
address book, and the PowWow icon on your desktop. Typically
the PowWow directory is named C:\POWWOW but this may vary.
4. Copy the CTL3D.DLL file from your PowWow directory to your
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If any other CTL3D.DLL files are on
your hard disk they should be removed (erased or renamed).
5. Please refer to the PowWow User's Guide, PowWow Frequently-Asked
Questions list, and HISTORY.TXT file for information on the new
release of PowWow.
You have now successfully upgraded PowWow.
